چکیده

Recently, interesting 4-D Lorentz violating models have been proposed, in which all particles have a common maximum velocity c, but gravity propagates (in the preferred frame) with a different maximum velocity cg 6= c. We show that the case cg < c is very tightly constrained by the observation of the highest energy cosmic rays. Assuming a galactic origin for the cosmic rays gives a conservative bound of c− cg < 2× 10 c; if the cosmic rays have an extragalactic origin the bound is orders of magnitude tighter, of order c− cg < 2× 10 c.

Constraining the New Aether : Gravitational Cherenkov Radiation

We study the simplest concrete theory for spontaneous Lorentz violation , the " New Aether Theory " of Jacobson and Mattingly, which is a vector-tensor gravitational theory with a fixed-modulus condition on the vector field. We show that the observation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (which implies the absence of energy loss via various Cherenkov type processes) places constraints on the para...

Pulsar Radiation and Quantum Gravity

Quantum gravity may lead to an energy dependence in the speed of light. The high energy radiation from gamma-ray pulsars can be used to place limits on such effects. We find that emission from the Crab pulsar at energies above 2 GeV trails that at 70–100 MeV by no more than 0.35 ms (95% confidence) and place a lower bound on the energy scale of quantum gravitational effects on the speed of ligh...

Cherenkov Radiation in a Gravitational Wave Background

A covariant criterion for the emission of Cherenkov radiation in the field of a non-linear gravitational wave is considered in the framework of exact integrable models of particle dynamics and electromagnetic wave propagation. It is shown that vacuum interacting with curvature can give rise to Cherenkov radiation. The conically shaped spatial distribution of radiation is derived and its basic p...
